The method established by the document is used to determine the content of 1,2-ethandiol (ethylenglycol) as mass concentration in the range of 200 to 1000 mg/kg in engine oils. For this purpose the sample is dissolved in chloroform containing the internal standard 1,3-propanediol. From this solution the 1,2-ethandiol and the internal standard are extracted by mixing and subsquent shaking with a mixture consisting of equal parts of methanol and water. The mass concentration of 1,2-ethandiol in the sample is then determined by gaschromatography from an aliquote part of the watery phase.
