This standard applies to transport systems used for the transport of specimens containing bacteria (with the exception of blood and urine) from the patient to a medical microbiology laboratory adhering to DIN 58956-1. It covers transport systems for general use, neisseria spp., helicobacter pylori and anaerobes. Transport systems for other special bacterial species, e.g. chlamydia, ureaplasms, mycobacteria etc. are not covered by this standard. The purpose of this standard is to lay down physical, chemical and biological requirements for transport systems. These requirements constitute the prerequisite for ensuring the survival of the bacteria during transport while preventing bacterial contamination of the enviroment.
