Adequate lighting is one of the most economically important tasks for preventing consequential costs and additional burden in all areas of society due to bad lighting. The successive new findings on new technologies and the resulting amendments to European and German law and to standardisation require planners and operators of lighting systems to regularly refresh their level of knowledge. The relations between lighting systems, current operating components, their controls and effects are becoming considerably more complex and require interdisciplinary knowledge across various technical fields in order to be able to use these in outdoor lighting in an optimum way with ecology and economy in mind. This document serves as a framework for determining the required knowledge from the fields of technology and safety as well as from a normative, legal, ecological and economical point of view. In this document, a requirement profile and a standard of knowledge is defined so that the minimum qualification of the 'light technician - outdoor lighting' can be ensured for the fields of evaluation, consultation, planning, installation as well as the operation and maintenance of outdoor lighting systems.
