This DIN SPEC in accordance with the PAS procedure was developed within a workshop set up on a temporary basis. The DIN SPEC was developed and approved by the authors named in the foreword. The DIN SPEC describes a reference architecture model that specifies a cubic layered model which not only describes the communications layers but also the entire life cycle of the system or product, as well as the automation and IT levels. Furthermore, it describes the structure and functioning of the 'Industry 4.0' components.
