Electro-deposition paints are exposed to different stability stress, e. g. temperature differences, shear stress and different deposition conditions. All these influences, simultaneously or in part, can result in an instability of the dispersion. Owing the circumstandes, precipitation and coagulation of the binder can occur. This again leads to sedimentation in the bath and/or on the area to be coated, as well as clogging of the filter or similar problems associated with the deposition equipment. This test method can detect integral the changes of stability of the electro-deposition paint. DIN 5655 specifies test methods for electro-deposition paints for automotive industry and general industrial applications. This part of DIN 55655 specifies a method for detecting dirt particles coming from e. g. previous processes, non-dispersed paint particles and other foreign particles in the electro-deposition paint. In practice, an increased sieve residue can have different reasons, e. g. metall particles introduced together with the coated object, cut loose from shut-off devices or coagulums resulting from dispersion problems.
