The IEC 61968 and 61970 Common Information Model, together with IEC 61850, are core standards in IEC used in applications that govern the electric grid systems. On the other hand, customer facility management and control is enabled by a large number of non-CIM-based communication protocols. One challenge facing IEC is to bridge the CIM-based electric grid domain to the non-CIM customer facility domain in a flexible way. IEC/TR 62939-1 'Smart Grid User Interface (SGUI) - Part 1: Interface overview and country perspectives' presents interface principles and provides requirements and use case analysis to help bridge between the two domains. IEC/TR 62939-1 identifies some existing standards that serve use case requirements to bridge the two domains. This standard defines a methodology for creating an adapter to enable interoperation between grid CIM-based utility systems and SGUI standards that bridge to the customer facility domain.
