This VDE application guide contains special requirements for a self-teaching function for proximity switches according to IEC 60947-5-2. The self-teaching function serves to automatically teach-in and save the optimum switching threshold value of a proximity sensor depending on mark or object detection. The market increasingly demands easy to handle man-machine-interfaces complying with a standardized process that is independent of manufacturers. To meet ergonomic requirements, the following rules for the one value teach-in process were elaborated by a working group consisting of different manufacturers. These rules serve as a basis for manufacturers of proximity sensors and can also be used by users to understand the teach-in principle. The teach-in process is triggered by pressing the teach-in push button. The operating conditions of the sensor shall comply with IEC 60947-5-2, 7.2.1. This VDE application guide shall be read in conjunction with IEC 60947-5-2.
